Six new faces carved into trees in Cottonwood Island Park

Local wood carver Elmer Gunderson has brought more of his artwork to life thanks to funding from the City of Prince George.

Cottonwood Island Park now has six fresh new faces on trees along the park’s trails, bringing the total to 12 since the project was initiated in 2005.

Gunderson says reactions have been all positive.

“People coming by were really excited to see more going in. It’s been quite a tourist attraction for the people in Prince George and people visiting us, so it’s been great.”

“One of the first ones this year I did was of a gentleman I was talking to when I was first getting started,” says Gunderson about one of his inspirations for the carvings. “So after he went away I carved his face into the tree; never got his name or anything.”

The project was funded Prince George’s Community Enhancement Program; another grant is expected to be applied for in 2017.

Prince George Heritage Commissioner Jeff Elder applied for the grants and initiated the project .
