Prince George city councillors Garth Frizzell and Murry Krause are headed to Ottawa this week to discuss a number of municipal priorities with federal government members. One highlighted topic will be infrastructure.
The two, as well as Federation of Canadian Municipalities representatives, will have a busy few days, meeting with about 150 MPs and Senators.
Frizzell hopes the government understands the needs of municipalities heading into the next federal budget. He says there’s been a lot of municipal funding progress made in the past six years, and that it’s important that the FCM stays the course.
He hopes all parties involved can establish some reliable funding program.
“That funding is as important as ever. We’ve still got massive infrastructure deficits all across Canada and we want to make sure that the federal government understands that.”
Frizzell is a member of the FCM and Krause was invited as president of the UBCM. Having two members from Prince means the city’s needs will be well represented.
“The infrastructure that Prince George enjoys a lot of it was built during a 20 year period some 50-60 years ago so it’s all starting to wear out at the same time,” says Frizzell, “What we’re going to need is pretty significant reinvestments into our community.”
He points to things like bridges, washouts, and sinkholes in Prince George are just a few of the things that need updating.
