If you think you might be raising the next Prime Minister, you might want to check out the City of Prince George’s #MsMayor event tomorrow.
Councillor Jillian Merrick says there are multiple reasons we still don’t see many women in roles like mayor.
“There’s lots of discussion about why women don’t occupy positions of leadership as much as men. Some of it has to do with systemic barriers that we’re dealing with and some of it just has to do with their own belief in their competency. We hear about this thing called impostor system where women don’t believe that they’re as capable even though they are.”
While the name focuses on getting young women and girls interested in civic leadership, Merrick says the event is open to anyone.
“It’s really youth oriented – targeting young people. We chose women in this example but it’s young boys as well. It’s about understanding that anyone who invests their education and their time and their enthusiasm in serving people can serve as a politician or a leader.”
There’s no sign up required – you just need to show up tomorrow.
“No sign up required. It’s drop in any time between 10 and 12 on Saturday at City Hall in the Council Chambers on the second floor. You’ll come and get to sit in the mayor’s chair, meet the mayor, get a pin, get a photograph and tell us what you’d do as mayor.”
