Spiking prices send more people to Prince George food banks

The St. Vincent DePaul Society in Prince George is seeing more people come through their doors thanks to a spike in food prices.

Board Member and Past President, Bernie Goold says they’re in good shape after a recent dry spell.

“We have had a couple of good food drives and we have a couple coming up that passes through the lean stage until the big rush for Christmas and that’s where we get 80% of our donations is around that season. I think part of the problem is the cost of groceries have gone up and people’s disposable income on food isn’t what it used to be even 1 or 2 years ago.”

Goold says several foods at their facility are in high demand. “Macaroni and cheese, hamburger, weiners, eggs and cheese slices. Pretty much all things we would be to sustain ourselves and families during the week.”

Family food hampers have gone up by 25 more per month with over 20 of those now going to seniors.

The Food Banks of Canada is reporting a 30% spike in usage since 2008.
