Fewer and fewer Canadians are lighting up.
Based on data from the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey, 2015, Stats Canada says 13% of Canadians at least 15 years old were smokers. That’s about 3.8 million people, a drop of nearly 400,000 since 2013.
Among these, 15.6% (2.3 million) are men and 10.4% (1.6 million) are women.
The largest age group of users were those in their early-to-mid-twenties, just shy of 1-in-5. The biggest drop between the two years were adults, falling 1.9% (nearly 400,000 people).
All that considered BC has the lowest rate of smokers among all the Provinces. 1-in-10 people in BC are smokers. On the other side of the spectrum, and the country is Newfoundland and Labrador at over 18%.
