Community Arts Council seeking more funds from City

The Prince George Community Arts Council is looking for more money from city council.

The CAC got just under $44,000 this year from the city through the myPG
Social Development Fund under the Cultural Richness strategic priority. CAC Executive Director Sean Farrell suggested bumping that to $52,000 next year, then raising it about 3% a year over five years to cover the annual cost of living.

Farrell says this will help with financial sustainability, and thinks it’ll help the city save money long term.

“Rather than everyone (CAC, Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Theatre NorthWest and ColdSnap Festival) having to come back every single year and making a new request, this way, if we have that five-year funding in place, including the cost of living increase, it’ll probably end up being a wash for the city.”

In his presentation, Farrell says the average artist’s income amongst 69 cities with populations between 50,000 – 165,000 is $28,900, which is about 40% less than the overall labour force average ($47,700).

Council supported the idea and sent it to city staff, a result Farrell is pleased about.
“We feel that we’re working with a team here that understands that arts and culture are a huge part of creating this vibrant city of Prince George that we can all be proud of.”

Council supported the idea and has sent it to city staff.
