Team WHL is making final preparations as they get set to take on Russia tonight from the CN Centre.
It’s game 1 one of the Canada/Russia Series.
While big names like Mitch Marner and Travis Konecny will not be on Canada’s World Junior team this year, Team WHL Head Coach, Tim Hunter says it opens the door for others to make themselves known.
“It opens up spots for other guys and sometimes that’s a good thing when you get players in a different mindset than those who have their sights set on playing in the NHL so this will be a different set of circumstances based on the depth chart we have.”
Prince George Cougar forwards Brad Morrison and Jansen Harkins are in the lineup for both games against Russia.
The game will feature four players from the Regina Pats including Austin Wagner, Sam Steel and Connor Hobbs who will dress for Team WHL while Sergey Zborovskiy plays for Russia.
Steel says the friendly rivalry between the four has already started.
“Some chirps have been thrown out between me, Hobbs and Wagner mocking Sergey a little bit but it will be good to play against him but once you step out on the ice your not teammates anymore. ”
Puck drop is slated for 7PM.
Both teams play again tomorrow in Edmonton.
The series will also head to Ontario and Quebec when the OHL and QMJHL play the Russians.
