The Prince George School Board is asking for for more consistent and predictable funding.
In a presentation to government’s Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as a part of consultations for next year’s budget, SD57 cites a suite of surprise one time funding announcements which have been helpful, but hard to plan for.
Last year the BC Liberals made three additional funding announcements following the usual annual announcement on March 15th.
One of those saw the government roll back $25M in administrative cuts across the province on May 31. Locally in Prince George, trustees got the news on the same day they were considering their third and final reading of their budget, resulting in a last second $622,655 adjustment.
Other major requests in the presentation, which will be discussed by Trustees at tonight’s meeting, were centred around rural education – asking Victoria to ensure support for its rural schools in McBride, Valemount and Mackenzie.
Lastly, SD57 makes yet another request for the province to develop a create a poverty reduction strategy, pointing to major socio-economic challenges faced by many students in inner-city Prince George.
Other notable points from Tuesday night’s agenda will see changes to the Duchess Park catchment area considered and possible facility changes to schools in McBride and Mackenzie.
