The new parking rules for downtown Prince George are now in effect.
At the end of last week, the city put up the new 3-hour parking signs right behind the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
Mayor Lyn Hall says while the new signs and fines are active, one piece of equipment is still on its way.
“The only thing we have not started is the License Plate Recognition Program and with that technology, we have haven’t started that piece yet.”
Once installed, it will be able to scan 5,000 license plates an hour and check the entire downtown parking area in 60-90 minutes.
Some concerns have been raised by people in regards to those who volunteer at special events or make frequent stops in the area.
Hall adds the city is considering an exception for those situations.
“We are still hearing from folks saying wanting to know if they can park for an excess period of time or if your business that makes numerous stops because they are servicing equipment they want to know what we can do for them. I know Fred Crittenden our Bylaw Services Manager is looking at those one-offs.”
The parking bylaws will be enforced 7am-5pm Monday to Friday and a first offense fine will now cost $50 instead of 25.
