It’s an exciting day for UNBC. For the second year in a row, the school took top honours in MacLean’s magazine’s annual ranking of Canadian universities.
UNBC is No. 1 of 19 in the Primarily Undergraduate category.
“It’s always really a pleasure to get reaffirmed and to get some feedback from our colleagues and from people across the country who look at UNBC and realize what a great institution it is,” says President Daniel Weeks. “It’s something we already know but it’s always nice to hear that from others.”
While pleased with the ranking, Weeks says the school is holding its own.
“We were down a little bit in a few categories. Then again, up a little bit in a few other categories. But one that jumps out most particularly is student satisfaction. We went from ranked No. 8 last year to No. 4 this year.”
UNBC also had strong scores in the research dollars, library acquisitions and student/faculty ratio categories. But Weeks says one of the biggest games came in the student lifestyle category.
“We went from No. 12 last year to No. 2 this year. Mental health services – last year, we were ranked No. 4, this year we were ranked No. 1.”
The school also finished in the top five across the country in faculty awards and library investment as a proportion of the school budget. UNBC tied with Acadia, one of Canada’s oldest universities, in the student awards category – the number of students per 1,000 who have won national awards.
Weeks says he’s honoured to be president of such a highly regarded institution and credits community support for helping UNBC come this far.
