Some elderly residents in the Hart made their concerns clear at Tuesday night’s Talktober session. They’d like to see more seniors housing in the area.
Mayor Lyn Hall started the conversation on housing, and the 60 or so residents, councillors, and city staff heard from older citizens who don’t want to more from the area.
The next step is finding a developer.
“Let’s face it, you don’t want to leave your neighbourhood so if we can provide seniors housing in the Hart for folks in the Hart then they’re much more happy to remain in their community,” says Mayor Hall.
The housing need stretches further than just neighbourhood pride. One elderly woman said she loves downtown but needs to stay in the area because of the better air quality.
The Mayor and Council would be interested in exploring developments on city-owned lands.
“When we did start talking about it folks said they don’t want to move into seniors housing any place else but the Hart,” the Mayor says, “that’s a pretty important issue for us.”
The city has tax exemptions that can help developers for this type of project.
The next Talktober is Thursday night at the Blackburn Community Hall.
