About 50 local residents spent their Sunday afternoon remembering fallen soldiers, police officers, and first responders.
Veterans, their families, beavers and scouts, and local RCMP placed over 1000 small Canadian flags by the graves of fallen service people in the Prince George Cemetary.
Joe Elliott is the third Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 and 22 year veteran of the British Royal Navy. He says it’s important we all remember.
“We’re coming up on Remembrance Day and one of the main purposes of the Legion is the poppy and teaching remembrance and why our Veterans have served for Canada.”
That message was certainly passed on to the more than 30 children placing flags, many a part of Scouts Canada. It was something Derek Grooten was happy to see. He’s a veteran of the Royal Dutch Army and he feels it’s important the next generation remembers.
“These days, not all kids are aware that all the sacrifices that have been made in the past for them to be able to live freely.”
Derek’s 8-year-old daughter Meagan will certainly know. She was helping her dad with the flags, remembering the “people who helped the world.”
Elliott added this was one of the first events a part of Remembrance Day celebrations. He adds the Poppy Campaign starts on October 28th.
