Prince George group using theatre to fight cancer

Local group Miracle Theatre is producing “The Last Romance,” a tony-award winning romantic comedy. It’s hoping to raise $50,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, donations, concession, and raffles for Spirt of the North to put toward new oncology equipment for breast health and breast cancer.

The Province is soon including digital mammography in the public health care system by moving clinics into hospitals. Spirit of the North Community Engagement Coordinator Esther Prosser says the government will buy the larger pieces of equipment, but there’s a lot of medical equipment that will still need to be purchased. Spirit of the North plans to raise about $500,000 in the next few years to complete a local breast cancer care and diagnosis suite.

Miracle Theatre member and show producer Anne Laughlin calls her $50,000 goal a small but important part of the suite’s budget. Laughlin was diagnosed with blood cancer two years ago and is still being treated here in the city. She says it was really important to her that the money stays in Prince George.

“I’m living proof that having a facility here and having equipment here means that we can be productive citizens.”

“The Last Romance” is about a widower trying to woo a standoffish woman in a dog park. It will first take the ArtSpace stage on February 17th, and Laughlin invites everyone to come for a laugh.

“People can have a night out, enjoy themselves at this romantic comedy, and feel good about the fact that they will be helping the fight against cancer.”

Miracle Theatre did a similar fundraiser last year, producing “Miracle on South Division Street” for Children’s Programs at the Salvation Army Food Bank and 27 Million Voices. It raised $42,294.35.
