Most of us are aware what our forests mean to the local economy and environment, but what about our health?
That’s what the free Healthy Forests, Healthy Lives: Exploring the Link between our Environment and Health event is exploring Wednesday night.
The panel will be in UNBC in room 7-212 from 6:30 PM – 9 PM.
Dr. Pamela Wright is on of the four on the panel. She’s an Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management Associate Professor at the university. She’s studied the effects forests have on our wellbeing and says they can reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and anger, and increase cancer-fighting cells.
The talk will be moderated by UBC Faculty of Forestry Dean Dr. John Innes. The other panelists are Northern Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sandra Allison, UBC Forestry Professor/Associate Medicine Professor Dr. Matilda van den Bosch, and UBC Forestry Professor Dr. Cecil Konijnendijk.
Wright says this is one of the first time’s health and ecological professionals will come together to discuss this topic.
“(The North) is 6% of the population but 61% of the land base and we know we live in, we’re surrounded by, we’re supported by our forests ecosystems and so its’ really critical that we focus on this issues.”
