RCMP issues apology to sexual harassment victims

This morning, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson issued an apology to hundreds of current and former female officers and employees who allege they experienced harassment, bullying and discrimination while on the job.

Paulson also announced that two lawsuits against the RCMP, related to the allegations, will be settled and that the government is providing $100 million in compensation to the plaintiffs.

“[The settlement] features a process for identifying those that seek recognition and compensation. It provides for a very fair and independent process for assessing what happened, the harm to them and any other harm to their family members.”

Nearly 1,000 women will receive compensation and Paulson says there is no cap on the total amount that will be paid out.

“It’s taken some time and it’s been very upsetting for Canadians and for those of us in the RCMP and my colleagues, the representative plaintiffs here today have demonstrated that clearly.”

The alleged incidents span more than four decades.
