The Prince George Public Library is showing support for literacy by sending 85 volunteers to 17 different locations on Wednesday.
They will be hawking the Prince George Citizen in support of Raise-A-Reader Day.
Communications Coordinator, Amy Dhanjal says the 2015 edition was very successful. “Last year we raised over $35,000 and that money was distributed to 23 different organizations in Prince George that worked on a number of literacy projects for kids and families.”
Being able to read is a skill many people take too lightly according to Dhanjal. “Sometimes people take the fact that they can read and interact with the world in that way for granted, there are so many people that struggle with day to day activities because they don’t have that foundation of literacy skills.”
Members of the Spruce Kings, Cougars, Telus, The Prince George Native Friendship Centre and Integris Credit Union will be participating.
They will be at the following locations.
– Books and Company
– College of New Caledonia
– Mcdonald’s on Massey, 15th Avenue, and Victoria Street
– Starbucks in College Heights and Pine Center Mall
– Second Cup
– Select Tim Hortons locations
– White Spot
Since 2007, the Raise-a-Reader campaign has raised over $327,000.
Last year’s fund supported numerous projects including the community lending library at Quinson Elementary School, the Library’s Books for Babies program and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince George digital literacy program.
