New tool to help City find possible archaeological sites

The City of Prince George and local consulting firm Norcan are working together on a new tool that will uncover potential archaeological sites in Prince George.

Project Manager Andrea Byrne says it’s important to know where these sites are so the city’s heritage can be preserved.

“Since so much of BC’s history is undocumented, we want to make sure that the proper channels are used to involve archaeologists and development so that we can understand our region’s history.”

As well as saving our history, the city can avoid building delays when it knows where these sites are ahead of time.

“So that we can identify where the areas are instead of doing a one-by-one situation. It just will save time and increase efficiency and as well we can gain the knowledge from the tool,” Byrne said.

The tool is still in its early stages so not many details are known yet.

Byrne invites the public – especially those who know of any undocumented archeological sites – to a public event at the Bob Harkings Room in Prince George Public Library on the 27th. The meeting starts at 7 PM.
