2015 Canada Winter Games Legacy Fund gives $600K for northern athletics

The Canada Winter Games are long over, but its legacy fund will help northern athletics for the next ten years.

The Games Host Society officially dissolved Monday and is leaving %600,000 to the Northern BC Community Sport Development Society (NBCSCS (sic)). The money will help coaches, athletes, officials, and volunteers.

Games Event Chair Anthony Everett says this money is an extension of what the NBCSDS has already done.

“The games were successful in part because we helped so many different groups achieve a higher level of officiating standard or coaching standard or what not, to develop those athletes, develop coaches, etc., and this will just continue that work.”

Everett says any Northerner involved in sports can send a grant application to the NBCSCS.

“You want to take your next certification of training and the only place to get that is in Vancouver, which, as Northern people, we all know is typically what happens, then you can apply for a grant. If they accept you, you can get that funding to go down take your certification and come back.”

The Host Society also signed an agreement with Pacific Sport Nothern BC, which is selling $200,000 worth of plaques for the Legacy Wall in the PG Civic Centre. Half of those proceeds will go to Pacific Sport Northern BC, the rest will fund local sports clubs.
