Bright and early this morning, more than a dozen cyclists began their ride to Purden Lake for the 7th Annual Bike-A-Thon to Benefit Spirit of the North.
The charity ride is sponsored by the Punjabi Canadian Senior Society.
“This group is just an amazing group that speaks to community and to health care,” says Judy Neiser, CEO of the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. “They, collectively within our community, have been able to raise funds and understand that where their money is going is something that’s going to help everyone.”
Dr. Satish Mann has been involved since the very beginning. He says he regularly advises patients at his family practice about the benefits of exercise and tries to set a good example.
“I love riding. I was riding before this ride started for almost 13 years. When they approached me, I thought it would be a good opportunity to go out there and show them how important it is for health.”
The event has raised more than $60,000 in 6 years.
Mann says it’s an event for the community by the community.
“It’s actually a lot of fun. Reiding in a group, if it’s for a noble cause like this, is more fun. You meet different people and it’s not about how fast we can get there. It’s about being together and hanging out. There’s a lot of support from the community and I’ve always enjoyed it.”
That community support goes far beyond the cyclists.
“We have a lot of other people from the community who support us. People will be following us in calls with signs and helpers. At Purden Lake, a lot of people from the community will join us. There’s usually a BBQ meal and get together.”
This year’s funds will go toward the purchase of 62 wheelchairs for UHNBC. The specialized mobility aids are customized to fit each patient, many of whom are recovery from strokes and surgical procedures. The price tag for the total purchase is $100,000.
