The Province is putting up to $2.5 million into the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) to help build an economic development strategy.
The money will be spent over three years to help advance sustainable economic reconciliation and create different initiatives like creating a roundtable of First Nations to give economic advice. It also aims to improve on-reserve employment data and engage all levels of government and industries on employment, leadership, and economic planning programs.
With the BC economy as strong as it is, Premier Christy Clark says now is the time to create opportunities for First Nations people.
“We want to make sure that our economy benefits everyone in British Columbia, no matter where they come from, no matter where they live because we need to create an economy that creates jobs for all people.”
BCAFN’s Regional Chief Shane Gottfriedson believes this development strategy will strengthen the First Nation’s economy.
“As we work together toward wealth creation and wealth management, we also want to release the potential of our First Nation’s citizens and capitalize on our people’s creativity, work ethic, and desire to participate in the economy.”
Through the BC Skills for Jobs Blueprint, the Province wants to hire 15,000 more Aboriginal workers within ten years.
