Canadian Sidearm Nation takes field for first time

The Canadian Sidearm Nation took to the diamond today, preparing for tomorrow night’s World Baseball Challenge opener.

This afternoon was actually the first time the team had practised together. Even so, General Manager Geoff Freeborn says the team is ready to compete.

“A lot of them are playing in the (Western Major Baseball League) in Alberta and Saskatchewan this summer and even some of the older guys they’ve been playing in the Sunburst League in Alberta which is a pretty solid league. So, it’s not like they’re just picking up a bat for the first time this year. They’re all in pretty good game shape.”

Most players are college players and ex-pros. Freeborn knows if they play their game, CSN can beat Japan.

“If we play our game and have solid defence, don’t really let the ‘Japan prestige’ get to us, I think we’ll be able to compete.”

Opening ceremonies are Friday at 7PM, first pitch is at Citizen Field at 7:30 PM.
