Next generation of mountain bikers strong at Hot Day at Otway

The future of mountain biking in Prince George looks promising following this weekend’s kids XC event at Hot Day at Otway Part 2.

The event featured its first ever kids race on Sunday, where nearly 50 riders 11 years and younger participated.

Throwdown Adventure Festival Society Mountain Bike Director Andrew Steele calls the event the “highlight of the weekend,” and he believes these kinds of competitions and opportunities are good for both the sport and young riders.

“Getting kids involved in the racing scene early and bring them up in a culture that supports racing, and beyond just the competition of racing: the discipline, the preparation, and the training,” he says.

He’s hoping the sport will continue to grow but can only do so with the community’s support and more coaches.

“There’s a lot of steps, right? It’s a long road but the first step down that road is getting the kind of participation we had in the kid’s race this weekend so it was great to see.”

If Prince George can find this kind of support, Steele hopes to network with other nearby communities towns to create a Northern mountain bike circuit.
