Safety Improvements at Hwy 16 and Cowart / Vance Rd underway

Safety improvements are underway at Highway 16 at Vance / Cowart Road.

The Ministry of Transportation is putting in a separate, protected left-turn signal on the central medians in both directions. So far, workers have installed the base for the new traffic light posts on both medians.

The current light system allows something the Ministry calls a “permissive” phase, where drivers can turn left once there’s a gap in traffic. The new light will eliminate this, which Northern Regional Director Scott Maxwell says will make the intersection safer.

“Intersections like this, accidents and, unfortunately, fatalities like we experienced in the Spring are tragic incidents and what this is designed to do is to really avoid those types of things,” he says.

The new lights will be fully installed and working by mid-August. Once completed, workers will start on an identical light at Highway 16 and Ferry Avenue.
