Vanderhoof RCMP attended a fire at the Plateau Sawmill, about 25 kilometres west of Vanderhoof, on Saturday.
The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. There were no serious injuries and Emergency Health Services cleared all personnel who were exposed to smoke.
“The fast response of Plateau employees and management resulted in this fire being controlled very quickly,” said Sergeant Svend Nielsen, commander of the Vanderhoof RCMP Detachment. “Without this action and the swift response of the Vanderhoof Fire Crews, it could have been a lot worse.”
Preliminary investigation has determined the fire was started by a welding torch near the edger machine during routine maintenance in the sawmill.
The Vanderhoof RCMP are assisting Work Safe BC with the remainder of the investigation. Work Safe BC confirms they have an investigator onsite at the mill.
