Neighbourhood’s community spirit on display at VLA Family BBQ

Today’s VLA Family BBQ was a great success. The event began with a parade.

“It’s not a huge parade but it’s gotten bigger than the last one and it’ll just keep growing,” says Lee Stewart, director of the VLA Enhancement Society. “It’s just a wonderful experience having a parade in the community.”

Mayor Lyn Hall and several City Councillors joined in the procession, as did local MLA Shirley Bond.

“The type of people that are involved here now – the mayor and everybody – I know we’re going places and I feel like our grandchildren are going to have a better home,” says VLA resident Tom Mowatt. He says the neighbourhood has its problems but progress is being made.

“I think is something that we all need to participate in. Being a native person off the reserve, this is what we need to do on every reserve to create a healthier environment. So I’m getting firsthand experience on how to do this when I go back.”

The VLA Enhancement Society calls the area ‘a neighbourhood with heart in the heart of the city.’

“I think when you use words like that you put the spirit back and that’s really really good,” says Mowatt.

After the parade, the BBQ took place in the park on Milburn Ave. The festivities included bouncy castles, face-painting and a teepee. The RCMP were on site registering bikes and the local fire department brought a couple of trucks down to show the kids.
