Overdose deaths continue to spike in BC

Overdose deaths continue to spike across the province.

New data out today from the BC Coroners Service show 371 overdose deaths in the first six months of 2016 with fentanyl being blamed in 60% of them. That is a 74% increase compared to the same time period last year.

Males accounted for 81% of overdose deaths, with those aged 20-39 accounting for the largest portion.

Prince George has seen an increase as well, albeit less rapidly.

8 people have died in PG, 4 from Fentanyl – which is trending to eclipse last years total of 13 by the end of the year.

An average of 61.8 overdose deaths have taken place each month in 2016.
