Prince George School Board lays out plans for administrative cuts

Parents in the Prince George School District are learning what exactly is on the chopping block for next year due to the provinces mandated administrative savings cuts.

The provincial government fought a public battle with local school boards, before partially backing down last month. However, the government is still requiring School District 57 to claw back $727,000.

$450,000 of that will come from “reductions in support for improving learning and increasing student capacity” and “reduction in support for essential 8 conditions for learning”.

SD57 Secretary Treasurer Alan Reed says a program was launched in 2012 with surplus funds for three years, which has now been sunset. The cuts continue last year’s administrative savings plan.

“It was largely providing support for professional development opportunities, training sessions, workshops that kind of thing to enhance the teacher’s skills set to deal with the challenges that students bring with them every day.”

“To get them ready to learn you have to address the realities of each student’s life.”

Reed says the School District continues to support teachers and student learning, “but at a smaller capacity”

$110,000 was saved within administration through staffing and tweaks to sick days and professional development. Another $116,000 will come from changes to student transportation.

Finally, just over $50,000 will come from increases in facility lease revenue.
