Prince George City Council honoured our local athletes at its meeting this week.
Mayor Lyn Hall acknowledged the athletic achievements of boxer Kenny Lally, Jake Lebrun and Liam Blackburn of the RBC Cup winning Kelowna Warriors and this year’s Prince George Cougars MVP.
“These young individual set an example in our community. I think it’s reflective of what we do in our sporting community and I think they’re just a great example to young people in our community and what you can strive for and achieve.”
Chase Witala set two Prince George Cougars franchise records with 120 goals and 239 points. He was this year’s Most Valuable Player, scoring 40 goals and racking up 79 points during the 2015-16 season. Witala has signed an Amateur Try Out contract with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Hall shared a personal story, saying he lives close to Lally’s family home and would often see him out on training runs.
“He did tremendous, tremendous work to get to where he is today and competed all over the world and has some great titles to be very proud of, not only Canadian titles but world titles. It was just a pleasure to watch that young man grow up.”
Lally holds 11 BC boxing titles and 7 national totals over 126 fights. He announced that he’ll be retiring from boxing this year. His last fight is scheduled to take place in Prince George this fall.
