It’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Local Notary Troy Hale says elder abuse can come in many forms; physical, emotional, financial or just plain neglect.
“And the reality is, people commonly think it’s strangers that are causing abuse. In many cases it could be someone close to to the elder such as a family member or friend.”
He says laying out a will well ahead of time, and taking steps to secure a power of attorney is an important first step to preventing financial abuse. He says he is called out to the hospital far too often, by the time people are struggling making decisions for themselves.
Hale says Prince George has several resources for the elderly
“We have the community response network, victims services, seniors services society and of course the RCMP as a resource should anyone suspect that an elder is being abused.”
More information on seniors services can be found here.
