Fire Chief recommending more firefighters, new Fire Hall

The Prince George Fire Department is hoping for some improvements around the city, including moving Fire Hall 1.

Fire Chief John Iverson told Council Monday night that the older building isn’t in the central spot it once was.

“It’s probably nearing the end of its useful life cycle. At the time that it was built it was probably in the best location, but the way the city has grown and expands over the years we have to evaluate what will be the next spot,” he says.

Iverson also suggested hiring up to 20 more firefighters.

“Our stations are spread out and it’s a big challenge to try and get people assembled as quickly as we need to. If there was another staffed unit, that would allow us to reach those levels that we would like to hit at some point in the future,” he says.

The National Fire Protection Association 1710 requires a fire to have fourteen firefighters on scene within eight minutes.

Other recommendations included a lot of new training improvements like skills maintenance, web-based learning, and improved training facilities.

These recommendations have gone back to staff for more consideration.
