Cat-3 burning ban lifted Wednesday

Starting Wednesday at 12 PM, you’ll be able to again have Category 3 open fires.

The Prince George Fire Centre is lifting the ban due to the recent cooler temperature and wetter weather.

Category 3 burns are essential large industrial burns consisting of more than 2 piles that are more than 3 metres wide and 2 metres high. Fire Information Officer Amanda Reynolds says if you’re planning this burn, you have to follow procedure.

“Anyone who’s doing any Cat-3 burning needs to have a registration number, and they need to have manpower available if the fire does get out of control, and then you’d have heavy equipment on site,” she says.

If you are planning a burn, Reynolds adds it’s important to do so safely.

“Have an adequate fire suppression system available at the burn area, never leave the fire unattended, ensure the fire does not exceed the capacity of the person firefighting tools and heavy equipment on site and making sure that the fire is completely extinguished.

If the weather changes, Reynolds adds they ban could be put back into place. For now, Category 2 burning is still prohibited.
