VLA Residents want upgrades before possible Seniors Home goes up

spruceCouncil approved third reading to rezone parts of Spruce Street for a new senior’s home last night. However, some residents feel there’s a real reason for concern with the current situation.

Spruce Street Strata President Shannon Euverman says the area has panhandlers, speeding cars, and illegal activity.

She hopes there will be improvements to the area, like better lighting, more policing, and lower speed limits, before anyone’s grandparents move in.

“The elderly people being exposed to the things that go on on Spruce Street is a little bit more difficult (in comparison to younger residents) because I think it makes them more of a target,” she says, “We had a fatality there last year, we’ve had a shooting there just a couple of months ago, we had a notorious ‘crack shack’ finally gotten rid of right next door to that property.”

Aboriginal Housing society of PG Executive Director Leo Hebert says he plans to work with the community on this

“We intend to go and have coffee with the Strata corporation and become part of the community right there,” he says.

The proposed 27-unit building would be at 1811 Spruce. Hebert adds the spot is ideal for seniors with easy access to medical care, groceries and bus routes.
