RCMP hope new programs can reduce crime

RCMP Superintendent Warren Brown is asking the city to be patient while Police battle crime.

A hot spot for illegal activity is at 3rd Ave & George St, where he says Police were called there over 1700 times last year.

He and the RCMP are trying to work with other community groups to fix these problems at the core.

“We can’t arrest our way out of this problem. A lot of the offenses being committed are on the lower end, they’re trivial, the people committing criminal offenses, drug use and prostitution, I don’t know if the courts are willing to accept that as a court issue so we have to find better ways of doing things,” he says.

Brown suggests an “Aboriginal Court” with indigenous offenders. In front of a judge, the offender would talk to victims and use their traditions to reconcile issues.

He also talked about partnering with Northern Health to help the addicted and mentally ill.
