CNC’s “Soil Monitoring Technology” research project could change wine game

The College of New Caledonia’s current research could help improve vineyards across the Province.

The school is looking into ways to better soil moisture monitoring. The amount of water that grapes absorb directly affects their flavour.

If CNC can find a way to control the amount of water in the soil, growers can tailor how their grapes, and wine, will taste.

If this goes well, Researcher Doug Jamieson says this could improve upon the Province’s great wine reputation.

“The BC industry, especially in the South Okanagan, has gained a lot of international attention and we kind of hope to continue to drive that forward,” he says, “instead of having people seek out necessarily wines from France or Italy or Australia, they’re going to try harder to get our wines because they’re so good.”

The in-ground sensors were installed last week. The project started in mid-April and will run until October 15th.
