The Canadian Taxpayers Federation stopped in the city with its giant “National Debt Clock” Thursday.
The truck trailer turned debt tracker claims to show the federal government’s debt in real-time, which read over $624.9 billion around 1PM on Thursday, June 9th.
Federation Federal Director Aaron Wudrick wants the giant clock to raise awareness of federal spending.
“I can’t tell you how many times we’re in small towns across this country and people just sort of turn and do a double take because they see the size of it, and that’s the impact we’re looking for,” he says, “this is not a sexy issue, it’s not something that people wake up in the morning thinking about, so we think it takes something as ‘in your face’ as a large digital clock to get people’s attention.”
Ideally, Wudrick wants the federal government to control its spending.
“They’ve done it before and they can do it again but it’s up to Canadians, right? Canadians are the one with the power. They have to call their MP, write to their MP (and) tell them they think it’s important that budgets be balanced and that we don’t stick the bill with future generations.”
The CTF will tour the clock through nine provinces over the next six weeks. You can also get a web debt update here.
