Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has died.
Ali was admitted to hospital in Phoenix, Arizona yesterday – said to be suffering from a respiratory illness but in fair condition. Reports of his death began appearing last night.
Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay in 1942. He was crowned Heavyweight Champion three times and won 56 of his 61 fights. He won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
Ali was also known for his refusal to be drafted during the Vietnam War. In 1967, he was found guilty of draft evasion, which he appealed all the way to the US Supreme court. His conviction was overturned in 1971.
Ali was 74.
