Brenda Wilson is departing Prince Rupert today, on a walk to Prince George in an attempt to “cleanse the highway of tears.”
The walk will feature 9 forums in communities across the corridor that will speak with families affected by the issue.
“We haven’t heard from the families or the community members that live along Highway 16 and we need to hear what they can bring to this issue to understand the needs in each of the communities.” Wilson said
The walk marks the ten year anniversary of a symposium held in Prince George on missing and murdered indigenous woman.
“There were 33 recommendations that came out of that 2006 symposium and probably about half of those have not been met yet.” Wilson noted
“The progress is slow, but we are really moving forward with the new government because now they have an understanding of having the families involved in the whole process, before that wasn’t happening.”
Wilson’s sister Ramona was murdered in Smithers in 1994, the crime never solved.
