Prince George Transit ridership numbers down again

ridershipPrince George’s bus ridership numbers are down again for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.

1.877 million people taking the bus. That’s down from 1.966 million last year, and 2.032 million the year before that. It’s the lowest it’s been in five years.

BC Transit spokespersons Drew Snider says there a few reasons this year’s numbers took a dip.

“There have been no service improvements in the system in many years, enrollment is down at UNBC. The fare change, which kicked in in January 2014, that’s when cash fares went from $2.25 to $2.50, that may still be impacting ridership as well,” he says.

Snider adds Prince George has been selected for future transportation upgrades. Regional Transit Manager Chris Fudge says he’s listening to riders to better service.

“We hear them. There is certainly some things that we can do sort of quickly and easily and some things that just take some more planning and thought and in some cases additional dollars that are required to address those things,” he says.

Future improvement plans include better Stat holidays and weekend services, and “Rapid Transit” with fewer stops.
