Almost all of Prince George’s bike lanes are now “Dedicated Bikeways.”
Coincidentally on the first day of Bike to Work Week, Council decided cars will no longer be allowed to park along 69 km of the city’s bike lanes, something Councillor Garth Frizzell strongly supports.
“I’ve got three kids and they’re biking age. We go around the community and sometimes it’s just scary. Just, frankly, scary and that’s not the way it should be. We have designated biking lanes and we want to be able to use designated biking lanes,” he says.
Past Councils have seen similar proposals for about fifteen years, and Councillor Murry Krause says it’s about time one was passed.
“There will be people in the community who don’t agree with it because they need to find a place close to where they’re going to park their car, but I think we’re going to have to start looking at some of these things just a little bit differently and saying we need to make room for everybody.”
Three kilometres of bike lanes will remain shared: Ospika Boulevard between 15th – 22nd and 5th – 10th, 15th Avenue between Ospika and Highway 97 and 10th Ave between Burden and McBride.
It was an 8-1 vote with only Councillor Brian Skakun opposed.
There’s no enforcement date yet, but Council did say there will be more signage and some sort of grace period.
