A local program has the Regional District’s support to improve farming in the Province.
“Beyond the Market” helps agri-food businesses along Highway 16. The program hopes to expand all over BC and wants the Provincial government to fund it.
Coordinator Christine Kinnie says one of the group’s priorities is getting new farmer’s started.
“We can show them, tell them how we’re doing it, but it’s kind of hard to duplicate that. What we really believe is that it should be a Province-wide porgram and actually funded by the Ministry and rolled out across the Province,” he says.
Kinnie is also looking ahead to the next generation of farmers. The average farmers age in BC is 56 and the Province has the fewest number of farmers under 25.
From here, the RDFFG says it’ll work with other municipal governments to help develop this idea before making it to the UBCM.
