Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince George has entered a national competition in a bid to win funding for a new playground
“We’re trying to gain a grant through the Canadian Scholarship Trust Inspired Minds Learning Project, says Cassie Lobban, Operations and Event Assistant with the organization. “It’s a nationwide competition of different projects that promote unique learning opportunities for children and youth.”
The group’s bid ‘A Playground that Grows with You – Embracing Nature through Play’ would create a new kind of play space for local kids.
“What we’re trying to get done is to build a natural playground in our yard at Kinsman Place. A playground that will incorporate tunnels and interesting structures made from wood, and trees and garden beds and greenhouses. We’re trying to promote free unstructured play for kids as well as promoting a connection to nature and that kind of healthy living, connecting to where your food is grown and how it’s grown.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters estimates the new playground will cost $35,000 including all of the equipment and supplies, design and installation. Lobban thinks they have a good chance of making it to the final round in the competition.
“We’re in the voting period right now. Voting ends May 16. Right now, we’re almost in the top 20. We need to make it into the top 20 to make it into the judging round.”
The Inspired Minds Learning Project has two categories, based on the scope of the project. The top 10 projects in each group are awarded grants of up to $100,000. The awards will be made in June.
You can vote for the Big Brothers Big Sisters project every day until voting closes.
