Prince George Farmers’ Market goes outdoors starting tomorrow

Our early spring weather is bringing the Prince George Farmers’ Market outdoors early this year.

Farmers’ Market Association president Philip Myatovic says the first outdoors market of 2016 will take place tomorrow.

“We’re having an early start simply because it’s warmed up,” he says. “We’re possibly two weeks ahead of last year. The snow has melted and drained off and grass is growing and flowers are blossoming so it’s a good time to start, we thought.”

The market doesn’t usually get outside until the beginning of May.

Myatovic says there will be 12 outdoor vendors at tomorrow’s market and a 24 still operating indoors. He says anyone interested in vending at the market should pay a visit tomorrow and pick up an application.

“We’re constantly looking for new vendors. If you grow it, make it or bake it, please come and stop by and take an application and you can vend. We need local here.”

Myatovic says there’s something special about being able to do your shopping outdoors.

“There’s always more energy outside simply because it’s more spacious and summertime brings out people. The sun, fresh air – they like to go for a stroll,” he says. “Summertime, we start slow but we peak in August usually and we have up to 80 vendors.”

The market opens at 8:30 tomorrow morning and runs until 2pm at 1074 6th Avenue, behind The Keg.
