Cullen “not strongly in favour of running” for NDP leadership

The federal NDP leadership is up for grabs, but Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen isn’t sure if he’ll run.

Cullen says he was shocked when now interim head Thomas Mulcair was voted out of party leadership on Sunday night.

He doesn’t plan on going for party leadership but hasn’t made a final decision.

“I’m taking some time with my family and friends and colleagues to talk it over. My inclination is, as of today, not strongly in favour of running,” he says.

It’s a big decision, one he’s putting a lot of time into.

“This is a serious commitment, obviously, but also a long one. You’d want to be successful and that is an, I don’t know, ten-year-or-more effort and that’s a big part of one’s life. I’m taking it very seriously but I hope not to take too long [with a decision].”

As the five-time MP and the current NDP Environmental and Democratic Reform critic, many feel he’d be a front-runner to become the new leader. The party has two years to replace Mulcair, so there’s no rush on a decision.

Cullen ran for the position in 2012 and finished third in the voting.
