Council addressing gaming grant application issues

City Council is writing a letter explaining how hard it’s become for charities to get money through BC’s gaming grants.

The Northern Interior Communities Associations (NICA) brought it up to Council this week, hoping Councilors could take the issue to higher governments.

NICA Spokesperson Shawn Bellamy says local charities needs the help.

“The money is supposed to not only support our infrastructure in this province but it also supports charities, groups, and non-profits by allowing them an area of funding that they otherwise don’t have,” she says, “we would have so many programs and services that would have to be on a fee-by-fee process or they just wouldn’t exist.”

Councillor Brian Skakun knows how hard it’s become to get funding.

“A lot of charities don’t even want to speak up because they feel like they’re going to get intimidated from the Gaming Branch and they could lose their funding altogether, so it’s a really difficult situation.”

Council will present a letter at an upcoming North Central Local Government Association conference from May 4th to 6th.
