IIO investigating “suspicious” Alward Street death

The Independent Investigation Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in to investigate last weekends “suspicious death” of a female in Prince George.

Just after 10pm on March 5th, Prince George RCMP recieved a report of a disturbance at a residence on the 1100 block of Alward Street. Officers responded and located an individual believed to be associated with the complaint, but were unable to locate a possible female victim.

Shortly afterwards at about 10:28 pm police were notified about an adult female found in medical distress in the area. Police attended and BC Ambulance Service was on scene providing medical assistance. The female was transported to the University Hospital of Northern BC by the BC Ambulance Service where she passed away.

The Prince George RCMP’s Serious Crime Section were called into investigate the suspicious death. Due to the sensitivity and what is known at this preliminary stage of the investigation, questions surfaced about a possible and yet to be confirmed connection to the initial police attendance and/or action taken.

As a result the IIO of BC was notified immediately and have asserted jurisdiction.

The IIO says the initial focus of the IIO investigation will be to determine if there is a connection between the death of the female and actions or inactions of officers.

The Prince George RCMP will continue with their concurrent investigation into the suspicious death.
