Council awaiting City report before helping CYC

The Connaught Youth Centre will need to be a little more patient when seeking Council’s support.

Over 100 cadets filled the gallery while the CYC asked Council for things like a 30-year-lease, inclusion in the 5-year financial plan, and to pave the Ron Brent parking lot.

CYC Liason Officer Eric Callaghan says that facility helps out so many people, and it’s just looking for future support.

“Now we’re just looking for a future, trying to have some credibility and the building for the next thirty years so we’re not wondering ‘the lease is coming up. Are we going to be here or be gone?’ We need to have some stability there.”

Apart of this year’s building assessments, the city is already looking into upgrading the CYC.

Councilor Garth Frizzell says Council would like to help as soon as possible, but is waiting until the report is finished.

“You want to be able to show immediate results but you can’t because you’re governing the whole city so you can just make one group jump the cue,” he says, “but as it turned out the Connaught Youth Centre has been high on our priority list and there are things happening already.”

Council did answer one request. It promised the CYC will be involved in all Ron Brent park developments from now on.
