RCMP’s new programs help First Nation’s offenders

Prince George RCMP is exploring new ways to reach out into our community this year.

The Police have created an “Urban Aboriginal Position.”

Superintendent Warren Brown says this officer will help strengthen ties between RCMP and first nations.

“He’ll also work with people so that he can build the trust and confidence in them. Perhaps those folks would be more likely to trust the police and provide more information with (Police) on offenses that have happened to them,” he says.

Another new program is “Native Court.”

In front of a judge, offenders would to talk to victims and use traditional methods to resolve issues.

There are already four Native Courts in the Province, and Superintendent Brown says it’s time there’s one in the north.

“With the population we have here in our city, the time has come that we look at perhaps more creative and innovative ways, and more sensitive and cultural ways to deal with an overrepresentation of aboriginal people in our courts.”

PG RCMP will also work on growing its restorative justice and domestic violence unit programs this year.
