It was a banner year for Barkerville’s Victorian Christmas, which took place Dec 12-14.
James Douglas, Manager of Visitor Experiences, says they smashed an attendance record. “You may recall last year we had broken an 8 year attendance record, this year we broke an 18 year attendance record. We haven’t seen numbers over 1,200 for the Christmas weekend since 1997.”
Douglas credits strong marketing, low gas prices and a lack of snow in other parts of the province for their success.
He added that they experience a bit of a Christmas miracle prior to the weekend when a 100 foot tree came down in a windstorm. “It didn’t hit a single grave marker when it came down in our century old historic section of the Barkerville cemetery. This giant tree managed to just weave itself in between gravestones feet apart from each other.”
Admission was by donation to either the Barkerville Heritage Trust or to the Wells Legion for a food hamper program. That resulted in 1,200 pounds of non-perishable food items.
