PG Farmers’ Market stalled in quest for liquor license

The PG Farmers Market has hit some roadblocks when it comes to getting a liquor license.

The province passed a policy in 2014 allowing alcohol sales at markets, but President Randall Stasiuk says it’s not as simple as meeting their standards.

“The unfortunate part is, when you try to apply that within a municipal boundary, it also has to pass those municipal hurdles that no one really talks about. Because we rent from the City, they have rules and regulations around potentially selling liquor on City property. A new bylaw would have to be put into place.”

The other option is to get a fifteen hundred dollar liquor license, which the market can’t afford.

Stasiuk still hopes to bring in local brewers like Northern Lights and Barkerville Brewing if the market is able to get a permit in the future.

“It’s a twofold thing, we get the opportunity to showcase something different in the market, and possibly open up new avenues for other raft brewers in the area while they get exposure.”

He noted other farmers’ markets from across the province, like on Vancouver Island, that have full beer gardens and tasting areas.

They’ll continue to talk to the city about their options going forward.
