Vanderhoof Flying Club seeks assistance for Airshow

The 2016 Vanderhoof International Airshow is starting to take flight.

In a letter submitted to the district earlier this week, the local flying club asked for use of the airport grounds, fire department resources, stages, and facilities like portable washrooms, trash bins, barriers, and signage.

The club asked Council to consider waiving the fees associated with the assests, and their setup and removal.

Mayor Gerry Thiessen says nothing has been confirmed yet, but Council is behind the project.

“These kings of events that are put on by volunteers are a huge asset to the community. It’s what makes a town a community, and a place that people like to call home.”

Council will also write a letter of support to help the club secure an NDIT events grant.

This is some good news for the Flying Club’s Peet Vahi, who has been involved in planning the biannual show for more than a year.

“It’s a large undertaking to put on an airshow. You can appreciate the amount of money involved in getting airplanes, fuel, and liability insurance all covered to run a successful event.”

A $25,000 grant from the provincial government earlier this year will certainly ease that burden over the coming years while alternating with Quesnel’s Skyfest.

More than 4500 people turned out for the 2014 airshow.
